Tetouan Day Trip from Tangier

A Tetouan day trip from Tangier is the one we recommend to travellers who have already done Chefchaouen and want something that has not reorganised itself around visitors. The drive is fifty minutes on the coastal motorway, and at the end of it is a World Heritage medina that most people passing through northern Morocco never see.

Tetouan was rebuilt from the fifteenth century onwards by Muslim and Jewish families expelled from Granada, and the Andalusian inheritance is still visible everywhere: in the street plan, the whitewash, the ironwork on the balconies, the tilework, and in dishes you will not find further south. A Tetouan day trip from Tangier is the shortest full day we run and the least crowded.

What your Tetouan day trip from Tangier includes

We begin at Place Hassan II, the vast tiled square in front of the Royal Palace, and enter the old town through Bab er-Rouah with a licensed local guide. The route takes in the covered souks, the tanners’ quarter, the leather and textile lanes, and Souk el-Hout, the old fish market with its Spanish-era arches.

Every Tetouan day trip from Tangier runs privately for your group alone, with door-to-door pickup and drop-off. The afternoon is flexible: fifteen minutes from the medina is the Mediterranean, and Martil, M’diq and Cabo Negro can all be added at no extra charge if the group prefers a beach to a museum.

Tetouan medina UNESCO site

The Tetouan medina UNESCO site was inscribed in 1997, and the citation describes one of the most complete and least altered old towns in the Maghreb. It is small enough to walk in two hours and dense enough that you would never find your own way out.

What makes the Tetouan medina UNESCO site different from Fes or Marrakech is simply who it serves. The shops sell to households: bread, thread, charcoal, plumbing parts. There is no carpet showroom circuit and nobody following you down a lane, which changes the entire experience of walking through it.

Dar Sanaa craft school

The Dar Sanaa craft school was founded in 1919 and still teaches zellij mosaic, woodcarving, plaster work, leather and embroidery entirely by hand. Students sit at the same benches their grandparents’ generation used, cutting tile with the same chisels.

If the Dar Sanaa craft school is open when we pass, it is the most interesting twenty minutes of the day — a working workshop rather than a demonstration laid on for visitors. It closes at weekends and through the summer holidays, so we check before promising it rather than after.

Before you go

Tetouan is a working city and Friday is its quietest day, with many shops closed around midday prayers. Monday to Thursday gives you the souks at full pace. Dress a little more conservatively than you would in Tangier — this is a less touristed place and the courtesy is noticed. In July and August the coast road fills and the fifty-minute drive can stretch to ninety, so we leave earlier. The medina is listed by UNESCO and the city is described on Wikipedia.

Who this trip suits

A Tetouan day trip from Tangier suits travellers on a second visit, people who dislike crowds, and anyone more interested in craft and architecture than in shopping. It is also the shortest full day we run, which makes it a good choice when you have an afternoon flight or an evening sailing.

It suits families less well than Asilah does: the souks are dense, the lanes are narrow and busy with handcarts, and there is no beach unless you add one. If you are travelling with small children, book a Tetouan day trip from Tangier with the Martil extension so the afternoon ends on sand.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Tetouan from Tangier?

65 kilometres, roughly fifty minutes each way on the motorway.

Is Tetouan worth visiting?

If you want an old town that still works for its own residents, yes — the Tetouan medina UNESCO site is the best example in the north. If you are after the photogenic, Chefchaouen suits you better.

Do we need a guide?

More than in Asilah or Chefchaouen. The medina is genuinely maze-like, signage is minimal, and very little is explained for visitors.

Will the Dar Sanaa craft school be open?

Weekdays in term time, usually yes. We check on the morning rather than promising it in advance.

Can we go to the beach as well?

Yes. Martil and M’diq are fifteen to twenty minutes away and add nothing to the price of a Tetouan day trip from Tangier.

Quiet, close and genuinely unusual, a Tetouan day trip from Tangier is the best half-forgotten option on this page. Combine both old towns on the Chefchaouen and Tetouan day trip, travel one-way with the Tangier to Tetouan transfer, or see the city itself first on our Tangier city tour.
