Tangier City Tour

This Tangier city tour covers the two halves of the city that matter — the old town on its hill, and the Atlantic cape fifteen kilometres west where two seas meet. Five hours, a private vehicle and a licensed guide who lives here.

Tangier has been Phoenician, Roman, Portuguese, English, Spanish and, for four strange decades of the twentieth century, an International Zone governed by nine countries at once. All of that is still legible in the streets. Almost none of it is obvious without someone to point it out, which is the honest argument for taking a guided tour rather than walking alone with a map.

What the Tangier city tour includes

We begin on foot in the old city. From the Grand Socco you pass through Bab el-Fahs into the medina, down to the Petit Socco with its century-old cafés, and across to the American Legation — the oldest piece of American diplomatic property anywhere in the world, and now a quietly excellent museum. From there the lanes climb to the Kasbah gates, Place de la Kasbah and the Dar el-Makhzen, the former sultan’s palace, whose terrace looks straight across the water to Spain.

Mid-morning we stop at Café Hafa, on cliff terraces above the strait, for mint tea. It has been open since 1921 and the list of people who have sat there is long enough to be tiresome; the view is the reason to go.

Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules

The second half of the tour leaves the city. Cape Spartel is the northwest corner of Africa, marked by an 1864 lighthouse, and it is the point where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet. Four kilometres south, the Caves of Hercules open onto the sea through a gap shaped — unmistakably, once you see it — like the map of Africa. The caves were occupied in Neolithic times and later cut by Romans quarrying millstones.

Below them, Achakkar beach runs for several kilometres. Camel and horse rides are available there for a small fee paid locally, which is usually the part children remember.

Morning or afternoon?

Both work, and they give you different days. A 09:00 start puts you in the medina while the souks are setting up and the streets are cool. A 14:00 start puts you at Cape Spartel and the caves in late afternoon light, which is better for photographs and considerably better for the sunset over the Atlantic. Cruise passengers usually take the morning slot; people staying in Tangier more often prefer the afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

How much walking is involved?

Around ninety minutes on foot in the medina and Kasbah, including hills and steps. The cape and the caves involve only short walks from the vehicle.

Can I do this Tangier city tour from a cruise ship?

Yes. It is our most-booked shore excursion and fits comfortably into a six-hour port call. We meet you at the terminal exit with a name sign and return you well before all-aboard.

Is Tangier safe to walk around?

Yes, in daylight, with the usual care for valuables in crowded souks. The main nuisance is unofficial guides approaching visitors in the medina — one reason people book a licensed one.

Can we skip the caves and spend longer in the medina?

Yes. The vehicle is yours for the duration, so the route bends to what interests you.

Hungry rather than footsore? Our Tangier food tour covers the same medina through six tasting stops. For a shorter half-day focused on the coast, see the Caves of Hercules and Cape Spartel tour, or head down the Atlantic on our Asilah day trip.
