Koutoubia minaret and palm trees in Marrakech

Marrakech tours from the north begin with a long drive and end in the most photographed square in Morocco. The red city sits 600 kilometres south of Tangier, about seven hours on the Atlantic motorway, at the foot of the High Atlas, and its medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. It is a long day on the road, and we will not pretend it is anything else.

All our Marrakech tours start at your door in Tangier — a hotel, a riad, the cruise terminal or Ibn Battouta Airport — in a long-distance vehicle with reclining seats and a licensed driver. You can go in one day, or split the journey over two with a night in Rabat and the Atlantic coast in between.

Marrakech tours we run from Tangier

There are three ways to reach the city with us, and each one includes fuel, motorway tolls, parking and insurance in the quoted price.

Every one of our Marrakech tours is private and priced per vehicle: no coach, no fixed departure time and no luggage surcharge. For a driver who stays with you for a week, with day trips to the Atlas and the coast, ask for a quote and we shape the plan around your dates.

Things to do in Marrakech: 6 places that matter

The list of things to do in Marrakech is long, so we keep it to six places that carry the city and sit mostly within a short taxi ride of one another.

  • Jemaa el-Fnaa — the great square at the heart of the medina, quiet by day and extraordinary at dusk, when food stalls, storytellers and musicians fill it.
  • Koutoubia Mosque — the twelfth-century minaret, about 77 metres tall, that has served as the model for towers across Morocco and Spain.
  • Bahia Palace — a nineteenth-century palace of painted cedar ceilings, zellij courtyards and shaded gardens, one of the best places to see Moroccan decoration.
  • Saadian Tombs — a sixteenth-century royal necropolis, sealed for centuries and rediscovered in 1917, with a hall of marble columns.
  • Majorelle Garden — a cobalt-blue garden created by the painter Jacques Majorelle and later restored by Yves Saint Laurent, with a museum beside it.
  • Ben Youssef Madrasa — a large Islamic college of carved cedar and stucco, reopened after restoration and a calm counterpoint to the souks.

Most things to do in Marrakech are easy to reach once you are in the old town, but the medina is largely closed to vehicles, which is why a driver who knows the nearest gate to your riad matters. Allow two full days for these six and a third if you want the Atlas.

Marrakech from Tangier: how to get there

Reaching Marrakech from Tangier means 600 kilometres, about seven hours of driving and eight with stops. The route follows the Atlantic motorway south past Rabat and Casablanca and then runs inland towards the Atlas.

There are four options. Flying is quickest if you value time above everything. The train takes most of a day with a change at Casablanca. The bus is cheap but long. A private transfer makes sense when you have luggage, a group or an awkward departure, and it removes two airport transfers and two security queues from the day.

The medina is largely closed to cars, so a Marrakech from Tangier transfer ends at the nearest accessible point to your riad, most often near Jemaa el-Fnaa, Bab Doukkala or Bab Laksour. Send us the riad name and we confirm the exact point before you travel. For hotels in Gueliz or the Hivernage we drive to the door.

When to go to Marrakech and what to know

The best time for Marrakech tours is spring and autumn. From June to September the city regularly passes 40°C and the afternoons are for the pool, while winter days are bright but nights can be cold, with snow on the Atlas visible from the terraces. Ramadan changes opening hours, and the square comes alive after dark.

Dress modestly in the medina, carry dirhams in small notes, and agree the price before you take a calèche or a guide. The souks are best before eleven and after five; in between, the heat and the crowds are at their worst.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best Marrakech tours from Tangier?

The one-day transfer if time is short, and the two-day version with an overnight in Rabat if you want a comfortable journey and a stop worth making.

What are the top things to do in Marrakech?

Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk, the Koutoubia, Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, Majorelle Garden and the Ben Youssef Madrasa.

How long does it take to reach Marrakech from Tangier?

About seven hours of driving, or eight with stops. A two-day journey splits it into two comfortable mornings.

Can you drop us inside the Marrakech medina?

Only to the nearest accessible gate, because the old town is largely vehicle-free. Riads routinely send a porter with a cart to meet you.

Is a private car better than flying?

If you value time above everything, fly. A private car makes sense with luggage, a group or an awkward departure time, and it lets you see Rabat or Casablanca on the way.

How many days do you need in Marrakech?

Three nights is comfortable: two for the medina and gardens, one for a day trip to the Atlas or the coast.

Whichever you choose, our Marrakech tours turn the longest journey we run into a comfortable one. Start with the Tangier to Marrakech transfer, break the journey with the Tangier to Rabat transfer, or read our guide to Casablanca before you go. The medina is listed by UNESCO, and the city is summarised on Wikipedia.
