Chefchaouen & Tetouan Day Trip
Chefchaouen, Tetouan

Chefchaouen & Tetouan Day Trip

A Chefchaouen and Tetouan day trip gives you the two most interesting old towns in northern Morocco in a single day — and, more usefully, two towns that could hardly be less alike. Chefchaouen is blue, mountainous and full of photographers. Tetouan is white, Andalusian, and still working almost entirely for the people who live in it.

The pairing makes geographic sense because Tetouan sits directly on the road home. A Chefchaouen and Tetouan day trip costs you an extra hour, not a second journey, and it is the best-value full day we operate.

What your Chefchaouen and Tetouan day trip includes

We leave Tangier at eight and reach Bab el-Ain around quarter past ten. A licensed guide walks you through the blue medina for roughly ninety minutes: Plaza Uta el-Hammam under the Kasbah walls, the old tanneries, the covered souk and the Ras el-Maa spring at the top of the town.

You then have free time for lunch on a terrace and for the blue lanes themselves, which reward wandering without a plan. A Chefchaouen and Tetouan day trip includes licensed local guides in both towns, because guiding in Morocco is licensed city by city and one guide cannot legally cover both.

Tetouan UNESCO medina in the afternoon

The Tetouan UNESCO medina was rebuilt in the fifteenth century by Muslim and Jewish families expelled from Granada, and it has never quite stopped being Andalusian. The street plan, the ironwork, the tiling and even some of the food come directly from southern Spain.

The guided walk covers the Royal Palace square, the covered souks — where the goods on sale are for local households rather than visitors — the tanners’ quarter, and the Dar Sanaa craft school. The Tetouan UNESCO medina was listed by UNESCO in 1997 as one of the most complete and least altered in the Maghreb.

Two medinas in one day: why this order

Seeing two medinas in one day only works if you take them in the right sequence, and we always do Chefchaouen first. It is further away, better in morning light, and busiest in the middle of the day — so arriving early buys you the quiet hour.

Tetouan then works as the counterpoint on the way home: emptier of visitors, louder with ordinary life, and a useful corrective if you were starting to think all Moroccan old towns are painted for photographs. Doing two medinas in one day in the reverse order gives you a crowded Chefchaouen and a closing Tetouan, which is the worse version of the same day.

Before you go

Chefchaouen is at 600 metres and cooler than the coast; Tetouan is at sea level and warmer. Bring a layer for the first half of the day. Friday is Tetouan’s quietest day with many shops closed around midday prayers, so Monday to Thursday gives you the souks at full pace. Regional background is published by the Moroccan National Tourist Office.

Frequently asked questions

Who this trip suits

A Chefchaouen and Tetouan day trip suits repeat visitors and anyone who has a single free day and does not want to spend it in one place. It is a long day — ten hours door to door — and it involves roughly four hours of driving, which is the honest trade you are making.

If your group includes small children or anyone who tires on cobbles, take the blue city alone instead. A Chefchaouen and Tetouan day trip covers two hilly old towns in one afternoon, and the second one arrives when legs are already tired.

Is one day enough for both towns?

Yes. A Chefchaouen and Tetouan day trip gives roughly four hours in the first and ninety minutes in the second, which fairly reflects their size. They are only 55 kilometres apart.

Why is Tetouan called the white dove?

For the whitewashed houses seen from the hills above the city, spread across the slope below the Rif.

Is the Tetouan UNESCO medina touristy?

Not at all, which is the appeal. You will see very few other visitors in the souks.

Do we need guides in both places?

For two medinas in one day, yes — and it is a legal requirement, since Moroccan guides are licensed for a specific city.

Can we swap Tetouan for the waterfalls?

Yes, but that is a longer and more physical day. See the Akchour option below.

For travellers who want contrast rather than repetition, a Chefchaouen and Tetouan day trip is the strongest full day in the north. Want the blue city alone with more free time? Take the Chefchaouen day trip from Tangier. For Tetouan on its own, see the Tetouan day trip, and for mountains and water instead of a second old town, the Akchour waterfalls day trip.
