Tangier weather by season

Spring (March to May): the best time to visit Tangier

Spring is the best time to visit Tangier if you can choose. Daytime temperatures are around 18 to 23°C, the countryside is green and the sea is still cool. It is ideal for walking in the medina, visiting Cape Spartel and taking day trips to Chefchaouen. Easter brings many Spanish visitors, so book early if you travel then.

Tangier in summer (June to August)

Tangier in summer is warm, with days around 27 to 29°C and cooler evenings thanks to the Atlantic breeze. It is the season for the beach and for long dinners outdoors. The sea is refreshing rather than warm. In July and August, many Moroccans who live abroad come home, so ports, roads and ferries are very busy: book your tickets early.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is the second best time to visit Tangier. September is still warm and the sea is at its best, while October and November bring softer light and the first rain. It is a good season for hiking in the mountains and for visiting without the summer crowds.

Tangier in winter (December to February)

Tangier in winter is mild but wet, with days around 15 to 17°C and nights near 9°C. Rain comes in showers, and storms can raise big waves on the Atlantic coast. It is the cheapest season, and a good time for museums, cafés and long lunches. Bring a waterproof jacket, because mountain towns such as Chefchaouen are colder.

Best time to visit Tangier for day trips and activities

The Tangier weather also changes quickly: a sunny morning can turn windy by the afternoon, so plan outdoor activities for the morning and keep museums and cafés as a plan B. These are the best months for each activity.

  • Chefchaouen and Akchour: April to June and September to October, when the hills are green and the waterfalls are full. Avoid days of heavy rain, because the roads and the trail can be difficult.
  • Asilah and Paradise Beach: June to September for swimming, with an arts festival in the lanes of Asilah in summer.
  • Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules: clear days all year, with sunset as the best hour. In winter the sea can be rough, so follow the advice of local guards.
  • Medina walks and food: every season, but avoid the middle of the day in July and August.

Wind, ferries and the best time to visit Tangier from Spain

The Strait of Gibraltar is one of the windiest places in Europe and Africa. A strong easterly wind called the levante can blow for several days at any time of year, and fast ferries between Tarifa and Tangier are sometimes delayed or cancelled when it does. If you are planning a day trip, keep a flexible plan and check with your operator the evening before.

Our guide to a Tangier day trip from Spain explains the ferries, the documents and a realistic timetable, and tells you what to do if a crossing is cancelled.

Ramadan and holidays: planning the best time to visit Tangier

The dates of Ramadan move about eleven days earlier each year. During the month of fasting, many restaurants close in the daytime and reopen at sunset, but the evenings are lively, with special sweets and long meals. Eid al-Fitr, at the end, and Eid al-Adha, later in the year, are family holidays, when many shops close and transport is busy.

You can still visit during these periods. Just keep your expectations flexible, dress respectfully and avoid eating or drinking in public in the daytime during Ramadan. Our article on Moroccan culture and etiquette explains the customs.

Planning tips for the best time to visit Tangier

  • Book accommodation early for Easter, for the summer holidays and for long weekends.
  • Bring layers: mornings and evenings are cooler than the afternoon, even in summer.
  • Wear comfortable shoes with grip for the cobbles of the medina.
  • Allow a spare day for weather, especially if you take ferries.
  • Combine the coast with the mountains: Cape Spartel in the morning, a day trip to Chefchaouen in the next.
  • Pack for the season: layers and a light waterproof in spring, sunscreen and a hat in summer, an umbrella in autumn, a warm jacket in winter.
