The Cape Spartel lighthouse stands on the north-western tip of Africa, about fourteen kilometres west of Tangier, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Strait of Gibraltar. It is one of the most beautiful short trips from the city: a white tower on a green headland, a sea that changes colour with the light and, a few minutes away, the Caves of Hercules.
This guide to the Cape Spartel lighthouse explains its history, what to see around it, how to get there from Tangier and when to go for the best light. It is written by a local transport and tour team that takes visitors to the cape every week, so the advice is practical. For a full day in the city, see our itinerary for one day in Tangier.

The history of the Cape Spartel lighthouse
The Cape Spartel lighthouse was built in 1864 by Sultan Muhammad IV, at a time when the Strait was one of the busiest sea lanes in the world. During the colonial period it was kept in operation by a consortium of Western powers, and under international law its longitude is recognised as the western limit of the Mediterranean Sea.
The waters around the cape have seen many sea battles, from English and Dutch attacks on pirate ships in 1670 to the Battle of Cape Spartel in 1782 and the Spanish Civil War. Offshore lies the Spartel Bank, a sunken island that some writers have proposed as the site of Atlantis, a theory that remains a legend.

The site was renovated between 2020 and 2021 and, according to Wikipedia, now includes a maritime museum, a garden, a restaurant and access to the top of the tower. Opening hours can change, so check before you go.
What to see around the Cape Spartel lighthouse
The terrace and the view of two seas
From the terrace, you look over the Strait of Gibraltar and the Atlantic. The two bodies of water meet at the cape, and on a clear day you can see the Spanish coast. The sea changes colour hour by hour, and the wind is a constant companion, so bring a light jacket.
The Caves of Hercules
A few minutes from the Cape Spartel lighthouse, the Caves of Hercules open onto the Atlantic through an arch known as the Map of Africa. The cave is partly natural and partly man-made: local people cut millstones from the walls for centuries. Legend says Hercules slept here before his eleventh labour, and archaeology shows that people lived here in the Neolithic.

The coast and the beaches
The road along the coast has viewpoints, cafés and wide beaches. The water is cool and the waves can be strong, so swim only where the sea is calm and where others are swimming.

Cape Spartel sunset and the best time to visit
The Cape Spartel sunset is the best moment of the day: the sun drops towards the Atlantic and the white tower turns gold. Arrive an hour before sunset to see the changing light, and plan your return before it is completely dark.

The best seasons are spring and autumn, when the air is clear. In summer the afternoons are windy and bright. In winter the sea can be rough, so follow the advice of the local guards at the caves. Read our best time to visit Tangier guide for the weather month by month.
