A fast catamaran ferry leaving the port of Tarifa for Tangier

A Tangier day trip from Spain is easier than most people expect. The fast ferry from Tarifa crosses the Strait of Gibraltar in about an hour or less, and Africa starts at the end of the pier. At its narrowest the Strait is only 14 kilometres wide, and on a clear morning you can see the Moroccan hills from the Spanish shore.

This guide shows how to organise your own Tangier day trip from Spain: the ferries from Tarifa and Algeciras, the documents you need, a realistic timetable, what to see and how to handle the return crossing. It is written by the local team at Transport Tangier, a licensed tourist transport company based in the city.

Is one day enough for a Tangier day trip from Spain?

Yes, if you keep the plan simple. A Tangier day trip from Spain works because Tangier is compact: the port is five minutes from the old medina, the Kasbah and the Grand Socco are within walking distance of each other, and the best viewpoints are a short drive away. With a morning ferry and an evening return you get roughly eight hours on the ground, enough for the medina, a long lunch and one excursion.

What one day cannot do is cover the whole north. Chefchaouen, Asilah and Tetouan each deserve their own day, and our guide to the places to visit near Tangier lists them all. If you only have one day, choose Tangier itself and do it well.

How to cross the Strait: Tarifa, Algeciras and the fast ferry

Two Spanish ports serve most day visitors, and the right one depends on where you start.

Ferry from Tarifa to Tangier

The ferry from Tarifa to Tangier is the shortest and most convenient way to make a Tangier day trip from Spain. The fast ferry from Tarifa to Tangier Ville port Crossings take roughly 35 to 60 minutes depending on the vessel and the sea, and the Tangier terminal is next to the medina. Operators such as FRS run this route: check their website for the current timetable and ticket rules.

Book the outbound ferry in advance in July, August and around Easter, when day-trippers and families fill the early departures.

Ferry from Algeciras to Tanger Med

Ferries from Algeciras land at Tanger Med, about 45 kilometres east of Tangier. The crossing is longer and the port is outside the city, so the road is part of your day: count on roughly 45 minutes each way. Baleària runs this route. Our Tanger Med port transfer puts a driver at the arrivals hall.

For a single day, Tarifa to Tangier Ville saves about an hour and a half of road time. Algeciras only makes sense if you are staying nearby.

Documents for a Tangier day trip from Spain

For a Tangier day trip from Spain you need a valid passport. A Spanish national ID card (DNI) is not accepted to enter Morocco, and children travel on their own passports. Citizens of the EU, the UK and the USA can normally stay up to 90 days without a visa; other nationalities, and foreign residents of Spain, should check the rules before booking.

Passport control takes place at the Moroccan port, sometimes on board before landing. Keep the passport, the return ticket and the booking on your phone in a bag you can reach easily. Rules change, so read the current advice of the UK government and US State Department.

A realistic timetable for your Tangier day trip from Spain

This is the Tangier day trip from Spain plan we suggest to travellers who take the first fast ferry from Tarifa. Adjust it to your own departure time and always keep a buffer for the return crossing.

TimeWhat you do
09:00Ferry arrives in Tangier Ville, passport control, meet your driver or guide
09:45Kasbah and its museum, the viewpoint over the Strait
10:45Medina on foot: Petit Socco, spice and craft alleys
12:30Lunch (grilled fish or a tagine) and mint tea
14:00Drive to Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules
16:00Café Hafa or the Grand Socco for a last mint tea and some shopping

The times are examples: ferry schedules change with the season, so build your own day backwards from the last crossing you are willing to take.

What to see in Tangier in one day

The Kasbah and the medina

Here is what fits into a Tangier day trip from Spain, in the order we recommend.

Start at the Kasbah, the old fortress above the sea. Its museum, the Museum of Mediterranean Cultures, is housed in the former sultan’s palace and tells the story of a city that has been Phoenician, Roman, Portuguese, English and international. From there the medina drops towards the Petit Socco, the small café square at its heart.

The Grand Socco and the Petit Socco

The Grand Socco, officially Place du 9 Avril 1947, is the doorway between the new town and the medina. The Petit Socco is the heart of the old town, with cafés from which the whole of Tangier seems to walk past.

Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules

About 14 kilometres west of the city, the Cape Spartel lighthouse stands where the Atlantic meets the Strait, and the nearby Caves of Hercules open onto the sea in a shape often compared to the map of Africa. Read more in our guide to the Cape Spartel lighthouse and the Caves of Hercules, or book the half-day tour.

Café Hafa

Café Hafa has served mint tea on a cliff terrace above the sea since 1921, and many writers and musicians sat here. It is the right place for the last hour of a day in Tangier. See its Wikipedia page for its history.

Day trip to Tangier from Málaga or Seville

A day trip to Tangier from Málaga is possible but long, and a Tangier day trip from Seville is longer still. Both cities are two hours or more by road from Tarifa, so you leave in the dark and come back late. Many travellers sleep in Tarifa the night before, or take the ferry from Algeciras if they start from Málaga.

  • From Málaga: roughly two hours by road to Tarifa or Algeciras, depending on traffic.
  • From Seville: roughly two and a half hours to Tarifa.
  • From Madrid or Barcelona: fly to Tangier instead, or plan two days.

Money, phone and other practical tips

  • Currency: the Moroccan dirham. Withdraw a little at an ATM in Tangier or change euros in town; some places accept euros, usually at a poor rate.
  • Phone: EU roaming does not apply in Morocco. Check your provider’s charges, or use an eSIM or the Wi-Fi in cafés.
  • Clothes: comfortable shoes for cobbles and stairs, and light clothes that cover shoulders and knees, which is respectful in the medina.
  • Wind: the Strait is windy and fast ferries can be delayed or cancelled when the levante blows, so leave a margin.
  • Time: Morocco is usually one hour behind mainland Spain in summer, and its clocks change around Ramadan, so check the time on your ticket.
  • Photos: ask before photographing people; stallholders may ask for a small tip.
  • Luggage: travel light, with one small bag, since every ferry passenger goes through passport control.

Why book a private guide for your Tangier day trip from Spain

Going to Tangier on your own is straightforward, but a Tangier day trip from Spain is short. With a local driver and guide waiting at the port you skip the taxi negotiations, see the medina with someone who knows which alleys are worth the time, and reach the ferry with margin to spare.
