Rabat Day Trip from Tangier

A Rabat day trip from Tangier is a long day and worth it if capital cities interest you. Rabat is 250 kilometres south, under three hours on the A1 motorway, and it is the most orderly and least overwhelming of Morocco’s imperial cities — wide French-planned boulevards running straight into a twelfth-century kasbah.

What makes a Rabat day trip from Tangier workable is that everything worth seeing sits within a few kilometres of everything else. You are not crossing a city between monuments; you are walking between them.

What your Rabat day trip from Tangier covers

Four sites, one licensed city guide, and a private vehicle for the whole day. The Hassan Tower is the unfinished minaret of a mosque begun in 1195 that would have been the largest in the world, abandoned when the sultan died; the Mausoleum of Mohammed V faces it across a field of broken columns.

A Rabat day trip from Tangier leaves at half past seven and returns around eight in the evening, which is five and a half hours of driving for roughly five hours in the city. We say that plainly rather than hiding it in a footnote, because for some travellers it is the wrong trade and they should know before booking.

Kasbah of the Udayas

The Kasbah of the Udayas was built by the Almohads in the twelfth century on the cliff above the Bou Regreg estuary, and painted blue and white in the Andalusian manner by refugees from Spain. Its monumental gate, Bab Oudaia, is among the finest pieces of Almohad stonework anywhere.

Inside, the Kasbah of the Udayas is residential and quiet: a handful of lanes, a walled Andalusian garden, and a café terrace looking out over the river mouth to Salé. It takes about an hour and it is the part of the day most people photograph.

Chellah necropolis

The Chellah necropolis sits outside the city walls and is unlike anything else in Morocco. A Roman town stood here first; in the fourteenth century the Merinids turned the ruins into a royal burial ground, and the whole site has since been taken over by gardens and by storks that nest on the minaret.

Ruins of the Chellah necropolis in Rabat

Roman foundations, Islamic tombs and an overgrown garden occupy the same ground at the Chellah necropolis, which is the sort of layering you normally have to travel a long way to see. It is the last stop of the day and the one people remember.

Stops on the way

The route south passes Asilah after forty minutes and Larache after an hour. Either makes a reasonable coffee stop, and Larache puts you within sight of the Roman city of Lixus on the hill above the estuary. Tell us in the morning if you would like to break the drive — it costs time rather than money. The historic city of Rabat is UNESCO-listed, and travel information is published by the Moroccan National Tourist Office.

Who this trip suits

A Rabat day trip from Tangier suits travellers who like monuments, gardens and orderly streets, and who do not mind a long day in a comfortable vehicle. It does not suit anyone who tires on the road, and it is the wrong choice if this is your only free day in the north.

For a first free day, take the blue city. For a second or third, a Rabat day trip from Tangier gives you something structurally different from everything else on this page: a capital rather than a medina, and a thousand years of state architecture in one afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive?

Two hours forty-five minutes each way on the A1, plus one comfort stop.

Could we take the train instead?

Al Boraq reaches Rabat in about ninety minutes and for a day visit it is genuinely competitive. What it does not give you is the Chellah necropolis and the Udayas without further taxis at the other end.

Is the Kasbah of the Udayas free to enter?

The lanes and the garden are open access; some interiors charge. Your guide handles it on the day.

Can we add Casablanca?

Not sensibly in the same day. Casablanca is another hour south — combine the two over two days instead.

Is a Rabat day trip from Tangier too much driving?

For some people, yes. If you simply want an imperial city, Fes is the better target and deserves an overnight.

For travellers who like monuments and calm streets more than souks, a Rabat day trip from Tangier repays the drive. Travelling one way? See the Tangier to Rabat transfer. For Roman ruins much closer to home, take the Larache and Lixus day trip, or stop on the same coast at Asilah.
