A private Chefchaouen to Fes transfer covers 200 kilometres in about three hours forty-five — down out of the Rif through Ouezzane and onto the Saïss plain. The bus does it in five and leaves twice a day; the shared taxi does it in four and leaves when it is full.
The real reason to do this leg privately is the detour. A Chefchaouen to Fes transfer can take in Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman site in Morocco, for roughly the price of a negotiated taxi and with none of the negotiating.

Every Chefchaouen to Fes transfer is private, air-conditioned and driven by a licensed multilingual driver. Fuel, tolls, parking and insurance are inside the quoted figure, along with one comfort stop in Ouezzane — a hill town with a strong religious history and a decent place for coffee.
Pickup is at the Chefchaouen medina gate nearest your riad, since the old town is pedestrian, and a Chefchaouen to Fes transfer ends the same way at the correct gate for Fes el-Bali: Bab Boujloud, Bab Rcif or Bab Ftouh depending on where you are staying. Tell us both riad names when you book and we confirm both points in advance.
A Chefchaouen to Fez private car runs single carriageway for much of the way — comfortable, but slower than a motorway, which is why the map’s estimate and the real time differ by nearly an hour.
The landscape changes completely on this leg: mountains give way to wheat country, then to the approach to Meknes and Fes. A Chefchaouen to Fez private car is also the only sensible way to do this route with luggage, since the alternatives involve a station at each end and a taxi to reach it.
A Volubilis and Moulay Idriss stop adds about two and a half hours and sits thirty kilometres off the route. Volubilis was the Roman capital of Mauretania Tingitana, and its mosaics remain in the open ground where they were laid rather than behind museum glass.

Five kilometres away, Moulay Idriss Zerhoun spreads across two hills around the tomb of the man who founded the first Moroccan dynasty. The shrine itself is closed to non-Muslims, but the town and the viewpoint above it are open to everyone. A Volubilis and Moulay Idriss stop turns a transfer into a half day of genuine sightseeing.

Fes back to Chefchaouen runs at the same rates and works equally well with the detour, which is arguably better in afternoon light coming the other way.
A good number of travellers book this leg northbound as the opening of a Morocco trip rather than the close of one: land at Fes, spend two nights in the medina, then take the road up into the Rif with Volubilis on the way. Booked as a pair with the return it costs less than two singles, and the driver carries the plan across both days.
If you are continuing to Tangier afterwards rather than staying in the mountains, say so at the time of booking. We can quote the whole Fes to Chefchaouen to Tangier sequence as one itinerary, which is cheaper than three separate transfers and removes the gap where you would otherwise be hunting for a car.
Three hours forty-five direct, or about six with a proper stop at the Roman site.
It is the best Roman site in Morocco and the mosaics are extraordinary. If you are passing within thirty kilometres of it, stop.
Not literally — the old town is pedestrian. A Chefchaouen to Fez private car meets you at the nearest gate, usually Bab el-Ain, and most riads help carry bags down.
That is a multi-day route rather than a transfer. Ask us for a quote and we build the itinerary properly.
Send us the date, both riad names, the passenger count and the number of large bags. We reply with a fixed price, usually within the hour.
With or without the detour, a Chefchaouen to Fes transfer is riad to riad with your luggage untouched in between. Coming from the coast, see Tangier to Chefchaouen, or do both legs in a single day with Tangier to Fes via Chefchaouen. Before you leave the mountains, the Akchour waterfalls are an hour away. Volubilis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as is the Medina of Fez.
