Northern Morocco: four destinations within two and a half hours
Tangier is the base: the Kasbah, the medina, Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules fill a day, and the airport and both ports are close by. Tetouan, fifty minutes east, has an Andalusian medina that few visitors see. Chefchaouen, the blue city of the Rif, is two hours fifteen away and works as a day trip or as a night in the mountains. Asilah is forty minutes south, a flat white town of murals and Portuguese ramparts that suits families and first visits.
The coast and the border: Larache and Fnideq
South of Asilah, Larache has the Roman ruins of Lixus above an estuary and a Spanish colonial old town, and almost no visitors. To the east, Fnideq is the town beside the Bab Sebta crossing into Ceuta, and the starting point for the beaches of M’diq and Cabo Negro. Both are easy to add to a transfer or a day trip.
The imperial cities: Rabat, Fes, Casablanca and Marrakech
Beyond a day trip, the long routes are best done by private car with a driver who runs them every week. Rabat and Casablanca sit on the Atlantic motorway, under four hours away. Fes is four hours inland, and Marrakech is seven, which is why many travellers split that journey over two days with a night in Rabat.
How to choose a destination
With one day, choose Asilah, Tetouan or Chefchaouen. With two, pair Tangier with a coastal town, or sleep a night in Chefchaouen. For a one-way journey south, a private transfer to Rabat, Fes, Casablanca or Marrakech saves the station taxis and lets you stop on the way. Tell us your dates and we suggest the best tours from Tangier for them.
Frequently asked questions
Which destination is best for a first visit to northern Morocco?
Tangier for the city and the coast, then Chefchaouen or Asilah for a day trip. All three can be combined in a four-day stay.
Can I visit more than one destination in a day?
Yes, where the towns are close. The Chefchaouen and Tetouan day trip covers two medinas, and Asilah combines well with Cape Spartel on the way back.
Are the tours from Tangier private?
Yes. Every tour runs privately for your group alone, or in a small group of eight at most on the day trips that offer it. There is no coach and no shopping stop you did not ask for.
Do you pick up outside Tangier?
Yes. We also collect from Chefchaouen, Tetouan, Asilah and the ports and airport, and we run transfers between any two of these destinations.
How do I book?
Choose a destination, open the tour you like and send an enquiry. We answer with a fixed price, usually within the hour.
Whichever destination you choose, our tours from Tangier are built around your day, not a timetable. The region is described on Wikipedia, and the Moroccan National Tourist Office publishes more ideas for planning your trip to northern Morocco.
